Pre Week 10 Reset
Hello and welcome. My name is Jordan Hoffmann, and I am the author of Hoff's Hot Takes. We have had a bit of a layoff from the Takes lately. Have not posted for the last three weeks. Job, two kids (both having hospital trips in the last few weeks), and overall BLAH feelings have led me to not having the Takes get complete. With that being said, we are back, and we are going to reset the league for the final push of the season. Thank you all for being understanding. Also, I know this is not the tone of the Takes, and as a good author, I hate changing the tone of writing in the middle, but thank you for all being friends still. I have said it before in the Takes, and I guarentee I will say it again : It is very cool we all still do this and care for one another. Keep it up everybody. We got each other... oh shit. Too emotional. Hey - JB has a chode, and BJ is bald. Thats better. Get settled in for a long one this week boys, because we got the info coming. Today's Takes are brough to you by Yeti Coolers, Twizzlers, and Birthday Cake.
League Summary - We are approaching week 10, so let us dive into the past, and look to the future for the league. We have five regular season weeks left, and some playoffs. We will give a recap for each team, in order of teirs. We have a "bottom tier/sucks" tier, a "kinda good" and a "contender" tier. All stats, rankings, and records are current as of Tuesday AM after Week 9 (11/08/2022 8:30AM)
SUCKS
Nick (0-9)
Last 5 - L L L L L
Next 5 - BJ, George, Tidwell, JPH, JB
If I recall correctly, I believe I left the draft saying that Nick and Nolan were the best two teams. When looking at the results, it seems as if Nolan held up his end of the bargain... Real nightmare from hell season for Rilli Thing this year. Dionte Johnson was labeled as the pick of the draft by Hoff's Hot Takes but was a disappointment. Cris Godwin was a disappointment. He does have three winnable games coming on the horizon with BJ, George, and Jordan in the next four. Hey - lets end on a hot streak Nick! Nick sold early, and gifted Mike Miles Sanders and Kittle for a ton of picks as Mikey went all in. Nick now has an extra 1st, 3rd, and 4th round picks to use on some trades or to build for the future. Keepers may be a question for Nick here coming up - Zeke is looking like he is trending down, and while DK is WR18, who knows how long this Geno Smith thing goes. Depending on QB play he could still be an elite talent. At the end of the day, Nick has Johnathon Taylor, and two first round picks next season, he will be good again.
Beej (2-7)
Last 5 - L L L L W
Next 5 - Rill, Joe, Micah, Stone, George
If we are talking nightmare from hell seasons, BJ is right up there. He is currently in the middle of the downturn that happens after you sell big to get into the $$$ championship game. On paper, his team was not that bad after leaving the draft, but alot of those young keepers went south quickly. Kyler Murray is QB6, but has seemed disaspointing if you watch the Cardinals. He can keep him for a 5th. Davonta Smith has been good, but has been been inconsistent with scoring either over 11 points, or under 4 - not much of an inbetween there. He can be kept for a 6th. Khalil Herbert has been a revelation, and with David Montgomery becoming a FA (I think...), that may be a great young keeper for Beej to keep in the 8th. Christian Kirk was one of the picks of the draft, but can be kept for a 6th as well. Garret Wilson is keepable in the 8th as well. So we got solid options, but they are for 5th, 6th, 6th,8th, and Cam Akers in the 16th, whose last 5 games have been 7,10,3,1,0 points. This does not even include Treylon Burks in the 7th if he ever does anything. Beej has an extra 3,4,5,and 10th round pick next season, so trading some of those picks, and getting up the board could put Beej right back to being competitive.
George (2-7)
Last 5 - L W L L L
Next 5 - Peter, Nick, Joe, Micah, BJ
George woke up on draft day and decided to build his roster for the next few years around 4th round picks Javonte Williams, and newly aquired rookie Brian Robinson. Robinson immediately got shot in the leg, and Javonte Williams tore his leg up after 3 games. Antonio Gibson is having a bit of a revival this season, so Brian is still working back in. Sneaky pick up of Kadarius Toney by George. If he can slide into that WR2 slot, and be a long term consistent play for Pat Mahomes he will have value. Jamaar Chase has been great, but has not played since week 6. Mike Williams the same. Id like to think that a healthy George is more like 4-5 or 5-4 at this point, but those are the breaks. George's best 5 picks next year are 4,5,8,9,10th round, so he will need to get creative. Look for a healthy George to come back and make the consolation bracket finals.
Jordan (2-7)
Last 5 - W L L L L
Next 5 - Mike, Nolan, Peter, Nick, Joe
Jordan had promise at the start, but it all fell apart quickly like a shabby sweater. Jordan sold early and got a 2nd and a 4th for Jalen Hurts, and DJ Moore, respectively. Jordan's hope turned real quick after about week 4 from looking for the playoffs, to looking for the future. Dameon Pierce and Chris Olave have been the best rookies at their position, and can be kept by JPH for a 4th, and a 7th. Jaylen Waddle is WR 5 and can be kept for a 6th rd. pick. Dalton Schultz was picked high, but missed a ton of time and has been a hella disappointment. The same can be said about Cortland Sutton without the injury, as Cortland's last 4 games have resulted in 9,4,3,1 points. Look for Jordan to be an, albeit hard earned, victory for the rest of the season, and look for him to make a ton of moves in the offseason and contend next year with the young core.
KINDA GOOD
Peter (4-5)
Last 5 - L W W L L
Next 5 - George, Tidwell, Jordan, JB, Mike
Peter started out en fuego as Dan Patrick would say, but has cooled off. Peter has had a ton of good for being 4-5. Brady, Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones, Mark Andrews, and his kicker are all top ten at their positions so far this season. Peter will need to probably do well in 4 of his last 5 games to get into the playoffs. Having Swift back will help, but Jamall Williams is still there to vulture a ton of touchdowns. Peter has sat still on his picks, so he has a regular set up for next season. He took George Pickens in the 8th, and he probably will make it on to Peter's roster for the longterm. Maybe a trade of a pick to Beej for one of his keepers he cant keep will be in the works? Stay tuned....
JB ( 6-3)
Last 5 - L W W W W
Next 5 - Stone, Berrones, Nolan, Peter, Nick
JB has to be disappointed in Kyle Pitts this season. TE18. 5 of his 8 games are 3 points or under this season. With that being the case, JB is still in a decent position here to make the playoffs if his team scores well. Stone, Berrones, Nolan is a tough stretch, but Peter and Nick are winnable games coming home. If his team stays hot, we got a stew cooking baby. JB has six guys on his roster at a top 9 spot at their position. Taysom Hill was a smart add to pair with Stinky Pitts (hehe). Mahomes and McCaffrey will keep him in all games he is in and can easily combine for 50 on a good day. JB should perhaps sneak into a 6 seed. If not, expect him to make a mockery of the consolation bracket. John also has an extra 2nd and 3rd round pick for next year. Also, Mike Thomas seems to not be keepable anymore, so let us see who JB decides to pair with Pitts and McCaffrey. Could use those extra picks to get a first to take a rookie? John also has an extra 1 2 and 6 in 2024, so expect more good teams outta JB. With Trump fading away (hopefully) maybe we need a new team theme. JB's team theme is so old (how old is it????) it now qualifies for AARP benefits.
Kyle (6-3)
Last 5 - W L W W L
Next 5 - JB, Micah, Mike, BJ, Nolan
Chugga Chugga CHOO CHOO. It is Derrick Henry season friends. Derrick Henry currently sits as RB1. His last 6 games - 22,25,29,18,40,26. That is a ton of points. Who knows how long he holds up long term, but I'll tell you this, Derrick Henry = playoffs for the most part, and Kyle is on his way there. Kyle scored Tua in the draft, and did not take him until the 14th round, meaning Kyle could have Tua for the next three years, and if this Dolphins team is legit, a 12th/10th/8th for him is great. Tua is QB9 even after missing a ton of time. Drake London seems to be his other keeper. Jeff Wilson got a new team, Terry McLuarin, and Deebo are just doing their thing, and his TE and D/ST are really good. Give me Kyle to be the 6 seed actually, not JB. Lingering question for his team is Breece Hall. Hall had 12,12,14,29, and 22 in his last 5 fully healthy games. He will be a third round keeper though, which will make him the second most expensive keeper after CMC. Does Kyle want to use his 3rd and 4th round picks on Hall and Henry moving forward?
Joe ( 5-4)
Last 5 - L L L W W
Next 5 - Micah, BJ, George, Tidwell, Hoff
Travis Kelce. Jalen Hurts. Joe Mixon. All top 5 at their position. AJ Brown is WR7. Joe's team is good, and this may be the year he finally gets that big playoff win. Joe dropped off a 2nd round pick to Jordan for Jalen Hurts, and since the trade, he had a bye, a 20 point game, and a 28 point game. Keenan Allen has played about 1 full game combined this season, so when he gets giong, Allen, Lamb, and AJ Brown is about as good as it gets for a WR corps in our league. Pair those three with Kelce, Hurts, Mixon, and Etienne and you have a final four team in my opinion. Joe plays BJ, George, and Jordan in three of his last five, so if his team performs, he should win with earing a ton of points. Side note - watch for Jameson Williams on the Lions when he gets back. Dude was good. Joe needs some long term keeper guys in the mix, but has 1,1,2,3,3 to trade and move around for long term planning.
Contenders
Steve (7-2)
Last 5 - W W W L L
Next 5 - Nolan Peter Nick Joe Micah
Tidwell started 7-0 and is now 0-2 in his last two. Fields for real? Fields can be kept for an 11th next season. Does CEH go back on the market, and does he keep Fields? Does he trade Fields to someone who needs a keeper? Barkley, Harris, and Fields could be nice, and Tidwell could have a ton of flexibility drafting. Barkley, and Kupp should keep him in games most weeks if Justin is good. I think Fields may be good, but really food for fantasy. Give me Tidwell for the money, or at least lose a close game to finish 4th. Also, Burrow on the bench/choosing between Fields and Burrow has got to be miserable. Tidwell's lowest score this season is 92, and that was his only game under 111 all season.
Micah (7-2)
Last 5 - W W W W W
Next 5 - Gaza, Stone, Jackson, George, Tidwell
Micah has not scored under 111 points all season. He is in first place. I think he is going to be consistent. Great pick with Kenneth Walker here. Micah can have that guy for a 4th forever. Henry, Javonte, Dameon, Kenneth all in the 4th. Other than that Micah has a deep solid roster that I think will be competitive all season long, and make it into the final 4. Probably win 3rd place. Get some money. I could also see him being in first place and winning the whole season. Good drafting this season.
Nolan (5-4)
Last 5 - W W L W W
Next 5 - Tidwell, Jordan, John, Mike, Kyle
Justin. Jefferson. That is all. Best keeper in the league. He is so good. 4 games this season already with over 25 points. WR4 this year. Ekeler and Kamara is the best RB duo in our league, and both will probably finish as top 5 or 8 RB. Tyreek Hill is on pace to break Calvin Johnson's record for most receiving yards in a season. That good? He probably has the best RB duo (Kamara Ekeler) and WR duo (Jefferson Hill) and QB duo (Herbert and Geno). Nolan will finish in the money. Maybe he drops Herbert and keeps Rhomandrae in the 3rd? His pick will be a late third, so value may be there. With that said, why mess with a good thing?? Give me Nolan for 2nd.
Mike (8-1)
Last 5 - W L W W W
Next 5- Jordan, John, Kyle, Nolan, Peter
Mike has scored under 112 points only one time this season. That is the recipe to be a big time team. It is kind of random when teams get 150/160/170/etc... but if you can consistently score 120-130 you will probably finish in the money. Loss was to Micah so that is why he is above him to be frank. Mike sat on Trevor Lawerence for a while, and he may be a great value coming up this next season. I see Mike keeping Trevor, Chubb, and JK. He would have set himself up to be studly, but he traded away a 1 and a 4 next season for Kittle and Sanders. I think these moves will propel him into the title game. Give me Mike. Chubb is the second best RB in the league behind Henry. He is hella deep, and set for this season. He could trade TJ Hockenson to one of the other guys who are contending for some picks to get back some capital. #Worth. He has an extra 6th. Give me Mike.
King of the Hill - Lowest score each week is eliminated. Winner gets a prize from JB.
Week 1 ) Beej
Week 2 ) Nick
Week 3 ) Nolan
Week 4 ) Jordan
Week 5 ) George
Week 6) Mike and Kyle (tied 78.7)
Week 7) Joe
Week 8) Peter
Week 9) Tidwell
Still Alive - Micah and JB. Whoever has the lower score of Micah and JB will be eliminated. Whoever has the higher score will be the King of the Hill for this season.
Stats from week 9 - Justin Fields won Offensive Player of the Week this week. He is the only player to win the award this season (offense, defense, or special teams) in a game where his team lost. He also set the record for most rushing yards in a game by a QB.... Joe Mixon had one of the best games of all time. 12th best game since 1950.... Not football, but KD made 62 free throws in a row in NBA games this season before missing on November 8th... Ravens are the best rushing team since the 85 Bears with Walter Payton... Lamar Jackson now has the 4th most rushing yards in NFL history by a QB. The list goes - Vick, Newton, Cunningham, Russ, and Lamar.
