9/12/2023 Hoff's Hot Takes

09/12/2023

Hello and welcome to Hoff's Hot Takes.  We are rolling out on this edition of Diners, Drive ins, and Dives... wait, wrong intro... Today's Takes are brought to you by Tropical Skittles, a nice pair od Dockers work khakis, and TABE testing.  We got some new and fresh stuff for the Takes this year.  Can't wait.

Week 1 Recap - Mike vs. JB will kick us off this season.  Mike had Chubb go for 17 points and look real solid in the process.  Mike also had JK Dobbins end his season after an hour into Redzone with a torn Achilles. Jordan of Hoff's Hot Takes reached out to Miggy for comment.  He said the following -> JK is an utter disappointment.  I drafted him in the first and he never produced.  He has not learned from Chubb on how to be a bell cow, and now he let the whole club down.  Even if he returns, he will have to re-earn the trust of the team. It is almost a foregone conclusion JK will not be back to the club next season.".  In the preseason Takes, I said JB has the best RB duo in the league with CMC and Ekeler.  They proved me right for combining for 60 to start the season.  JB has to be worried about how trash Desmond Ritter looked.  BAD.  Pitts may only get like 4 good balls a game.  Anthony Richardson is electric.  Does JB trade Allen soon and keep rolling with Richardson?  Could help him?  Could be fun?.... Micah vs. George is next.  And for the first time this year, I will break out the ol joke - What can be said about this game that has not been said about Chernobyl?  Micah wins 87-48.  Slapfight of the week, perhaps the decade.  Rashee Rice on Georges bench was his highest scoring player with 10 points.  I am not going to judge George's team until week 6.  I bet it will be insanely different. Also, Micah picks up a point in week 1 without a great performance.  All guys, but two, were between 7 and 19 points.  Micah needs to sell AJ Brown for a young keeper WR and a pick (for example, Micah trades AJ and a 7 to Tidwell for a 2nd round pick.  And that is your fake trade of the week sponsored by JB)... Tidwell vs. Jordan will go next -> Jordan had an all around good game to beat Tidwell.  Bijan Robinson had a good (Chris Berman noise) WHHAAAAAP move to score a TD, and they never looked back.  Bijan, Ridley, and the combo of Olave and Waddle should keep him up there.  Did not like Tyler Algier getting 22 points on the bench, but I kind do because if one of them goes down we are looking pretty, and if I am very lucky, we got ourselves a rich man's Zeke/Pollard situation. Tidwell needs to trade Tua for picks, because he HAS to keep Justin Fields for the price, and he can win somebody the league I think if he stays healthy.  I bet Tidwell gets a point next week.... Nolan vs. Kyle will be the next game we speak on.  Nolan had Justin Jefferson just be Justin Jefferson - He had 9 for 150.  Brandon Ayiuk turned into Jerry Rice and had a bunch of yards, 2 TD, and over 30 fantasy points.  Justin Herbert had a game as well.  Ravens looked like trash, but 11 points from the D/ST is good.  Nolan had Pierce and Jacobs combine for just 13 points, so if that can turn around somehow he is a stud.  Kyle had pretty much the worst game imaginable from Daniel Jones and DJ Moore, who both combined for like 6 points.  I am going to put Kyle in the Tidwell territory of "I bet they win in week 2".  If Breece Hall comes back strong he is gonna be solid up the middle... BJ vs. Joe is next.  Beej started the week on a sour note with Kelce being listed out, but he recovered nicely somehow with Juwan Johnson.  Beej also became the second team EVER (15 years) to have two negative scores in their lineup.  Aaron Jones killed it, but not an ideal start for Brother Beej.  Joe hada  zero, but the Cowboys D/ST scored 42 points to lead him.  Kind of lucky he got bailed out, but both these teams underachieved.  We will learn more next week.  Kind of a shitty game.  It really should have ended like 85-80... Nick vs. Peter is the last matchup we will speak of this week.  Peter had 24 points from his D/ST and kicker, and 35 from everyone else in the lineup for Peter (as of the start of MNF) Peter had everyone in his lineup score between 4 and 7 points.  Nick did great even though he sat Mr. Massage for Joe Burrow.  Nick really got saved by Tyreek Hill having 44 points.  I think this will be in the bottom portion of Nicks weeks.  I bet he comes back,  I see Nick winning next week as well.  Perhaps the third point.  To be honest though, I have not looked at who is playing who, so these predictions are probably so wrong.  Peter had Pat Freiermuth score 6.8 points - a TD and one catch for 3 yards.  Good game from Diggs for Nick...

Interview Question of the Week - Today we have the following question: You get a free plate at a great BBQ spot.  You get a four-item plate, and you can order anything you want.  Your meal comes with bread for the table, some ice-cold water, and an ice-cold beer/cocktail.  What is your four-item plate?

Mike: Burnt ends, cornbread, brisket, pork chop

Joe: Brisket, mac and cheese, ribs, and smoked sausage

Nolan: Brisket, pulled pork, cornbread (duh), and baked beans with bacon

Micah: Sliced Brisket, homestyle mac and cheese, potato salad, and baked beans

Kyle: Brisket, cornbread, mac and cheese, and ribs

BJ: Brisket, pulled pork, beans, and cornbread

Nick: Burnt ends, jalapeno cheddar link, baked beans with chopped brisket, and cornbread (other than me, Nick wins for best answer of the week.  He even gave me a John Daly as his cocktail.  The lemon and tea just complement the BBQ and spice so well.  Great job Nick.  You win this week!)

John: Burnt ends, ribs, pulled pork, and mac and cheese (John really made a point to make me know that he would try all the sauces on the meat.  John is a sauce guy.  He really wants a good Carolina golden mustard sauce I think...)

George: Burnt ends, rib tips, baked beans, and coleslaw.

Jordan: 1/2 slab of ribs, pulled pork, Coleslaw, Cornbread.

Pro Football Reference Fun - Today we are going to look at QBs.  I made an, albeit informal, list of the best 16 guys of the 2000s who played QB.  The stat today is least INT in a three-year stretch.  We are looking for the most elite passers who did not throw any picks for a three-year stretch.  I also chose years only where they started over 12-13 games.  So no chicanery there...  We will start with the QB with the most, and build suspense for the end...  Remember, these are their BEST three year stretches with the least picks.

10)  Carson Palmer (05-07) and Dante Culpepper (02-04) = 45

9) Brett Favre (94-96) and Eli Manning (16-18) = 40

8) Phil Rivers (07-09), Cam Newton (13-15), and Tony Romo (08-11) = 35

7) Big Ben (12-14) = 33

6) Matt Stafford (16-18) = 31

5) Peyton Manning (04-06) = 29

4) Mike Vick (04-06) and Drew Brees (16-18) = 28

3) Russell Wilson (17-19) and Pat Mahomes (18-20) = 23

2) Tom Brady (15-17) = 17

1) Aaron Rodgers (17-19) = 12

Best Scores: We are going to do a running tally of a perfect lineup for each week, and for the season as a hole.  What player had the best performance each week at each position?  What player had the best score for a single week for the length of the regular season.  This week, we are going to obviously only have week 1 scores, but moving forward we will have it updated to reflect league long good games. THE ONE RULE IS THEY HAVE HAD TO BE STARTED DURING THEIR WEEK.  For example, Steve Tidwell had Tua on his bench score 32 but that does not count because he was on the bench...

QB: Justin Herbert (Week 1 Nolan) - 20.92

RB: Christian McCaffrey (Week 1 JB) - 32.4 points

RB: Austin Ekeler (Week 1 JB) - 27.4 points

WR: Tyreek Hill (Week 1 Nick) - 44 Points

WR: Brandon Aiyuk (Week 1 Nolan) - 31.9 points

TE: TJ Hockenson ( Week 1 Nick) 7.5 points

D/ST: Cowboys (Week 1 Joe) - 42 Points

K:  Jake Elliott ( Week 1 Micah) - 16 points

0 and Negative Watch - Another new wrinkle we are going to keep track of this season ->  Who started players who got their teams 0 or negative points for a week.  Maybe there will be a prize for the person at the end of the season who has the most 0s in their starting lineups... We will be calling it a "0-" JOE started Tee Higgins (1st 0-)...BJ had Graham Gano, and the Dolphins D/ST both had -1 points (1st and 2nd 0-)... GEORGE stared Chigoziem Okonkwo at TE who got 0.0 (First 0-)... MIKE started Dallas Godert (1st 0-)...See you next week!

Start Sit Situations - I am going to start talking about "what ifs" in the league -> IF Tidwell started Jakobi Myers over Godwin, and Tua over Fields, he would have won... IF Jordan started Tyler Algier he would have the 3rd point. Honestly, that is about it.  Not that fun of a first edition of this part of the Takes... If Mike started Michael Pittman over DeAndre Hopkins he would have gotten a points point and would have one right now, and BJ would have 0.

5 Best Rookies - We are going to do a running power ranking of the best rookie dynasty picks.  This will be updated weekly.  We have a ton of guys who showed up ready to go in week 1.  Let us cook.

1) Bijan Robinson - Jordan. Dynasty (16th) -> 6 catches, 95 yards, and a nasty TD.  Tyler Algier's usage should be kind of an issue maybe, but still elite things going on here.

2) Jahmyr Gibbs - Peter. Dynasty (16th) -> Gibbs had 3 catches and 73 total yards.  He looked better than those numbers though.  I get the Alvin Kamara Comparisions.  If he slowly takes the job over from Montgomery, who had 25 touches, he will be amazing by the end of the year.

3) Zay Flowers - John. (5th) 9 catches for 78 yards.  He also had 9 rushing yards.  Lamar looked for a him a ton, and when he got the ball in his hands, he was electric.  I think he could be JBs new keeper.  JB has an extra 2nd and 6th next year, so a high keeper wont kill him.

4) Jordan Addison - Nick. (5th) 4 catches for 61 and a TD.  He looked good, and I trust Cousins to get the ball to some play makers.  If he is basically Adam Theilen these net three years, that is worth a 5th rounder, and probably higher.

5) Sam Laporta - Peter. (14th) -> Sam is on pace for 85 catches and about 700 yards.  If he didn't score any TDs on that pace, he would be TE 15 (according to 2022 scoring). If he just scores 3 times this season with this pace, he would be TE 7. 6 scores would put him in the top 5 in 2022.  Could be a huge break out next season. He should end up being what Kyle Pitts was supposed to be... Was this an elaborate scheme to make a Pitts joke to enrage JB?  Yes...

Random Stats - Joe Burrow had 31attempts, and only 82 yards passing.  That is the third lowest yardage total for any QB who has thrown for 30 times in a single game ever... Aaron Rodgers is 9-0 in his last 9 starts on Monday Night Football... Tua threw for 450 yards and did not take a single sack.  He is the only guy to not get sacked and throw for 450 in a season opener... Patrick Mahomes did not have a receiver gain 50 yards in the Chiefs opener. That is the first time in 94 starts he has not had a 50-yard receiver.

King of the Hill - As a reminder, each week will eliminate the person with the lowest score. The person standing at the end will be the King of the Hill.  Today, we eliminate George Patterson.  George scored 48 points this week.  Thanks for coming out this season George.  STILL ALIVE -> Joe, BJ, Nick, Kyle, Jordan, JB, Mike, Micah, Tidwell, Peter, and Nolan.

Week 2 Preview - Jordan went 5-1 in week 1 predictions...Give me Jordan, JB, Nolan, Kyle, Tidwell, and Nick. The game of the week is Joe vs. Nick.  Give me Tidwell for the 3rd point... Give me Mike or Peter for being eliminated in King of the Hill #Worth
